Beach Ward is an inpatient ward located at the Julian Hospital in Norwich, Norfolk. Beach Ward provides care for older men. But there isn’t a fixed age criteria for admissions. The ward offers admission for acute care needs, assessment and treatment planning.

What this service offers
Our Beach Ward team cares for male patients with the following conditions:
- Dementia with Lewy bodies,
- Alzheimer's disease,
- Vascular dementia,
- Frontal lobe dementia,
- Dementia-related illness,
- Underlying physical health conditions which could be leading to or contributing to confusion.
Beach Ward provides care for men from the Norfolk and Waveney area. The team also provide care where community care is not appropriate due to the level of illness and risk. This can sometimes include people from Suffolk.
Access this service
GPs refer people to Beach Ward. This is by referral to our East and West Dementia and Intensive Support Team or our Central Intensive Older People's Service.
A Mental Health Assessment referral via mental health social services may be necessary.
Visiting and onsite facilities
Beach Ward has a protected mealtime system in place, from 12:00 to 14:00 and 16:30 to 18:30. If you wish to visit within these hours, please speak to our ward staff.
Car parking is available on site with a valid permit. Get a free permit from the Hammerton Court Reception.
Beach Ward provides full disabled access and toilet facilities. Our staff are available to support entry to the ward at all times.
Refreshments are available between 10:00 and 15:00, from Monday to Friday in the Hammerton Court Café. A vending machine is also available for cold drinks and snacks.
How this service support carers including friends and family
Our Beach Ward team liaise with carers, allocating time for discussion when required. We provide information on the ward for those using our services and their carers. family or friends.
The Hammerton Court Café also offer support and advice to carers, and people who are living with dementia. This is available on the third Wednesday of each month from 11:00 to 13:00.
The café is in the reception area of Hammerton Court at the Julian Hospital.
Carers assessments are also available via Norfolk County Council.
Urgent help
If you are a service user and are in crisis and need support urgently you can contact your service on the number which will have been provided.
Call 111 and select the mental health option to speak to our 24 hour mental health crisis line.
If you are with someone who has attempted suicide, call 999 and stay with them until the ambulance arrives.
If anyone is at serious risk of harm, call 999 and ask for the police.
For non-life threatening medical situations, call NHS111 on 111.
