Sandringham Ward

What this service offers

Sandringham Ward offers care to inpatients who have complications in later life. These include:

Physical health problems

  • Direct effects of physical health on mental health
  • Effects of prescribed medication on mental or physical health
  • Drug interactions between psychotropic and physical health medication.

Function problems

  • Decreasing mobility with a risk of falls,
  • Difficulty with personal care and daily living activities.

Social circumstances

  • Loss events associated with ageing, such as retirement or bereavement
  • Social isolation related to ageing.

Diagnosis problems

  • The onset of functional illness in later life. Particularly psychosis where diagnosis requires specialist treatment.

Our Sandringham Ward team provides inpatients with assessments and care plans. The team have a holistic approach to assessments. This includes addressing physical health needs. The team includes physiotherapists and occupational therapists. These people help with assessments and guide treatment.

Treatment options include drug treatments, psychological interventions and physical interventions. The team also provide practical support with all aspects of daily living.

Access this service

Sandringham Ward is an inpatient service. The team provide care for people who cannot manage safely in the community.

Admission to Sandringham Ward can be informal or formal. A formal admission means a detention under the Mental Health Act.

Our Julian Hospital Admission and Discharge Team manages referrals between Monday and Friday. Our Intensive Older People’s Service (IOPS) manages referrals outside of office hours.

Visiting and onsite facilities

Parking is available at the Julian Hospital site. Visitors must collect a parking permit from the Sandringham Ward Nursing Office.

Disabled parking is available outside of the Sandringham Ward building.

Sandringham Ward provides full disabled access, including toilet facilities.

Refreshments are available from a café which in Hammerton Court. This is part of the Julian Hospital.

How this service support carers including friends and family

Our Sandringham Ward team encourages input from the relatives and carers. This begins from admission through to discharge.

Our team on Sandringham Ward work with inpatients and their relatives and / or carers. This is to plan care. The team also encourages meetings and communication with family and carers.

The ward nursing team are available to address individual concerns. They make time to understand your relative’s needs.

Our Discharge Co-ordinator, based on the ward, will offer information on carers assessments.

Urgent help

If you are a service user and are in crisis contact your care co-ordinator during normal service hours.

Call 111 and select the mental health option to speak to our 24 hour mental health crisis line.

If you are with someone who has attempted suicide, call 999 and stay with them until the ambulance arrives. 

If anyone is at serious risk of harm, call 999 and ask for the police.
