What this service offers
Sandpiper Ward provides assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for inpatients with the following conditions:
- Anxiety
- Bipolar affective disorder
- Delusions
- Intrusive thoughts
- Personality disorder
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Psychosis
- Schizophrenia
- Severe depression
- Significant thoughts of self-harm.
The length of stay on Sandpiper Ward can vary from a few days to a few weeks, including a period of rehabilitation. Our team work with our inpatients to ensure we meet their needs and ensure that their stay is as short as possible.
Inpatients receive a review each week. This can include family members, carers or an advocate. Community nurses are also involved in our inpatients care while on the ward.
Access this service
Sandpiper Ward is an inpatient service. People are usually admitted to this ward if their risks are unable to be safely managed in their community.
We make a formal request for admission to our Crisis Team. This is following assessment and agreement with an individual that they need an admission to the ward. This is then discussed with our Bed Management Team who source a bed on the ward.

Free parking is available at the Hellesdon Hospital site.
Sandpiper Ward offers disabled access but does not have disabled toilet facilities.
Refreshments are available from a café located on the Hellesdon Hospital site.
How this service support carers including friends and family
Our Sandpiper Ward team invites the involvement of relatives and carers in care and treatment plans. With consent they are also invited to weekly review meetings. The team also involves relatives and carers to discussions about their loved ones return into the community.
Our team is also able to offer support to carers and refer people for carers assessments.
