Mayfly Ward is at Hellesdon Hospital in Norwich. It is an acute admission ward that offers assessment and treatment. The ward is for people experiencing acute mental illness, who are not safe to manage in their community.

What this service offers
The length of admission to this ward can vary from a few days to a couple of weeks.
Our team all work together with inpatients to ensure we meet their needs and their stay is as short as possible.
Inpatients have a review every week with our team. This can include family members, carers and/or advocates. Our inpatient’s community nurse is also involved in care, maintaining contact throughout.
Mayfly Ward cares for people living with the following conditions:
- Anxiety
- Bipolar affective disorder
- Depression
- Personality disorder
- Psychosis
- Schizophrenia
- Significant thoughts of self harm
- Suicidal thoughts.

Access this service
A formal request for admission is made to the Crisis Team. This is following assessment and agreement that admission to the ward is necessary. We discuss this with the bed management team or the on-duty senior service lead.
Visiting and onsite facilities
Monday to Friday anytime apart from protected meals times up to 21:00.
Protected meals are:
8:00 – 9:00
12:00 - 13:00
17:00 — 18:00
No children under 18 on the ward to visit. Please book the family Room with the ward staff by calling the ward.
How this service support carers including friends and family
With invite the involvement of relatives and carers in the care of their loved ones. This includes an invitation to attend weekly review meetings.
We make plans for discharge from the ward with family and carers as appropriate.
Urgent help
People who are already being on our ward and who need urgent help should telephone 01603 421239.
Call 111 and select the mental health option to speak to our 24 hour mental health crisis line.
If you are with someone who has attempted suicide, call 999 and stay with them until the ambulance arrives.
If anyone is at serious risk of harm, call 999 and ask for the police.
For non-life threatening medical situations, call NHS111 on 111.
