Energy accounting

Energy accounting; which can also be called social energy or a social battery, is a way of thinking about energy levels.

It is based on the idea that everyday activities and social interactions can be a real energy drain for an autistic person.  This can cause exhaustion and/or high stress levels.

The idea of an ‘energy bank account’ can be used to think about:

  • deposits’ – putting energy in/replacing energy

  • withdrawals’ – taking energy out

It gives a very structured and logical way of looking at energy draining and energy replacing activities. This can help to avoid physical and mental health problems that can happen when people have used up all their energy.

Energy draining activities will be different for everyone but may include social activities or unexpected activities. They may also include activities that the person really enjoys, but still result in draining them of energy.

Energy replacing activities will also be different for everyone but may include spending time alone or spending time doing a hobby/special interest.

The basic idea:

  • Think about how much energy is needed for activities that day or week

  • The ‘deposits’ will build up or replace energy in your energy back

  • The ‘withdrawals’ will use up energy from your energy account (this is likely to be different on different days).

  • It is important to make sure you have enough energy in your energy bank and/or make time to replace energy used.

  • You may need to make lots of ‘deposits’ to prepare for something where you make a big ‘withdrawal’ like attending a wedding or giving a presentation or make lots of ‘deposits’ after an unexpected ‘withdrawal’ such as an argument or the car breaking down.
