Managing change/routines
Dealing with change, minor or major, can be really difficult if you are autistic. Routines can help us predict what is going to happen and feel safe in our environment and activities.
Sometimes minor changes such as moving between two activities or a change in your environment can be distressing. Other big events like holidays, starting or changing school, moving house or Christmas, can create change and upheaval, causing anxiety.
Having time to prepare for change and / or using visual supports e.g. countdown calendars, lists or looking at pictures of new places can all be really helpful. The National Autistic Society (NSA) have created some useful information about dealing with change.
