Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Trust is officially ‘veteran aware’

Norfolk and Suffolk’s mental health trust is officially 'Veteran Aware' for its work with past and present members of the Armed Forces.

The accreditation, which was awarded on Armistice Day from the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VC HA), acknowledges NSFT’s commitment to improving care for veterans, reservists, members of the Armed Forces and their families.

Posters will now be displayed in wards, clinics and public waiting areas urging anyone who has served in the armed forces to make themselves known to staff.

Veterans will be supported by an ‘army’ of Veterans Champions who have undergone Veterans Awareness training and have access to veteran’s support groups run by NSFT’s dedicated Armed Forces and Veterans Practitioner Wayne Ward.

“We are so very proud to have achieved Veteran Aware status. With many military bases across Norfolk and Suffolk, it’s vital that we provide the very best care possible for veterans and their families whilst also supporting the recruitment and retention of veterans, military families, and reservists.

"This accreditation recognises our Trust’s commitment to ensuring veterans are fully supported by their local NHS healthcare services and is testament to the hard work and dedication shown by our staff, many of whom are veterans themselves, in achieving this." said Diane Palmer, Lead for Trauma Informed Care, Veterans Mental Health at NSFT

Veteran Aware is a status given to those who follow a list of key pledges, including ensuring that the Armed Forces community is never disadvantaged compared to other patients; training relevant staff on veteran specific culture and needs; making veterans, reservists and service families aware of appropriate charities or NHS services beneficial to them, such as mental health services or support with financial and/or benefit claims; and supporting the Armed Forces as an employer.

The accreditation follows on the heels of a new Veterans Integrated Service which was launched in July 2021. The service provides a combination of mental health, welfare, and drug and alcohol support for Veterans and their carers, with access to our unique Veterans Group Stabilisation Programme delivered by Dr Roger Kingerlee.
