Free courses to help mental health coming to Sheringham

Recovery College. Discovery, Meaning, Purpose

Free courses to help people manage their mental health are coming to North Norfolk for the first time.

They are being run in Sheringham by the Recovery College, a team within Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust focused on supporting people to live well whether or not they have symptoms of any condition.

Laura Leggett, Recovery College manager, said: “We recognise the need for this kind of support in the North Norfolk area. The courses are for people who may not have been able to attend in person before or those who may be new to the college.”

There are two dates for the courses, which will be held at The Lighthouse in Cromer Road - Monday 10 July, CHIME, 10am-noon, and Wednesday 26 July, Five Ways to Wellbeing, 10am-noon.

Each course is led by a practitioner and a peer tutor, someone who can offer their own lived experience of recovery.

CHIME introduces the key drivers of recovery - Connection, Hope, Identity, Meaning and Empowerment. It covers the research evidence supporting this and how it can be put to use in everyday life.

The Five Ways to Wellbeing - connect, be active, take notice, keep learning, give - can improve physical, mental, and emotional health. The course covers how wellbeing links with personal recovery and how to set recovery goals.

Courses are informal and carers and family members are encouraged to attend as well to understand how to better to offer support.

Laura said: “All of the courses are written and delivered using lived and learned experience and focus on how people can live fulfilling and meaningful lives with mental health challenges.”

Recovery Colleges provide free educational workshops and courses, open to everyone over the age of 16, designed to support people on their mental health recovery journey.

Courses cover a variety of topics, with the aim of empowering people to take control of their own lives and become experts in their own recovery.

The Recovery College is not a replacement for clinical support but provides a safe space to learn among other people who have experienced mental health challenges.
