What this service offers
Southgate Ward treats adults with the following conditions:
- Anxiety
- Bipolar affective disorders
- Depression
- Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Personality disorders
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Psychosis.
We show patients and their carers around Southgate Ward upon arrival. We provide a welcome pack and show patients to their own en-suite room.
We determine the length of stay on Southgate Ward by looking at the individual’s treatment. During this time our team of health professionals work with the individual. This is to assess, plan and check their care and other needs.
Access this service
Southgate Ward is an inpatient service. The Home Treatment, Psychiatric Liaison and Crisis Response teams manage our referrals. Deeming whether an admission is appropriate following an assessment of the individual's needs.
The request for assessment may come from a GP, carers or an Accident and Emergency department.
Visiting and onsite facilities
Our visitor’s car park is available on site at the front of the West Suffolk Hospital. A short walk around hospital will bring you to Wedgwood House. Charges apply, see parking tariffs here.
Southgate Ward hosts a quiet room which is available for use by visitors. The ward also has a room available off the ward for visitors with children.
Children under the age of 16 are not allowed on Southgate Ward. If this is an issue it is advisable to call the ward before visiting.
A vending machine offering snacks and refreshments is available onsite. A café can is also located in the main hospital.
Our ward staff can offer drinks to visitors upon request.
How this service support carers including friends and family
We encourage our patient’s family and carers to form part of their assessment and care plan.
With our patient’s permission we may ask to speak to relatives and carers. This is to receive and provide information, to offer support and to work towards the care of a patient.
Carers are often provided with a 'carers clinic' to help inform and support them.
