Fundraising for Voyage of Recovery

Five young people who use the services of Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust are taking part in an around the country sailing voyage, this June.

They will join staff from the Early Intervention team for Great Yarmouth and Waveney to sail the first leg of the trip from Ipswich to London over six days.

Clinical team leader Charlotte White; Felicity Leighton, mental health practitioner; and nurse Laura Morgan, are currently raising £3000 to support a Voyage of Recovery for the crew of young people with psychosis to help develop confidence, skills and a fresh perspective on life.

Charlotte said: “We will be sailing with the Cirdan Sailing Trust on the mighty Faramir, a fast sailing yacht, purpose-built for sail training. Sailing long distances in her involves physical effort and teamwork, learning how to navigate as well as cooking, cleaning and everyday boat maintenance - learning key skills for life.

"It is hoped that this experience will bring everybody together, pushing us all out of our comfort zones, and through teamwork will bring a great deal of achievement, build confidence and resilience; all things that will aid recovery.

“The support so far has been incredible. NSFT has kindly paid the deposit for the trip from charitable funds but we just need a bit more to help make the trip possible. It will be an amazing experience; becoming part of the crew, learning new skills and overcoming lots of challenges.

"We will also be doing some joint fundraising with the service users nearer the time but COVID has made this a little more difficult recently.

"We know it has been a tough year for all, not just financially but also emotionally and mentally, and those young people receiving our services have been hit particularly hard, so please dig deep if you can.”
